Lloydminster Animal Hospital is happy to provide a wide array of elective and non-elective surgical services. Elective procedures include spay and neuter for dogs, cats, rabbits, and a few exotic species, as well as dental procedures and lump removals. We are also able to provide for emergency or non-elective procedures such as exploratory surgery, Caesarean sections, and lacerations to name a few.
We also provide specialized orthopedic surgery for emergency situations like fractured bones as well as for elective procedures such as cruciate ligament injuries and luxating patella surgery. Fractures can be repaired with surgical procedures such as bone plating, interlocking nails or external fixators or sometimes with splinting or casting.
All surgical procedures are performed under strict aseptic conditions in a dedicated surgery suite with anesthesia and pain control tailored to the requirements of the patient. Patients are monitored closely by a dedicated technologist along with electronic monitoring devices and we use multiple modes of warming for patient comfort both during and after surgery. Patients are supported with intravenous fluids during surgery and post operatively as needed.
We also maintain relationships with referral practices to handle procedures that may be beyond the scope of what we can provide. We can help with deciding if a referral is in the best interest of the patient.
Patient care and comfort are of paramount importance to us to ensure a successful outcome and lessen complications.
At the Lloydminster Animal Hospital, we offer veterinary care for ALL species, but are up front with owners that we are not an exotic specialty practice.
The majority of what we deal with in this area in terms of exotic animals are guinea pigs and rabbits. We are very comfortable with guinea pig neuters and rabbit spay and neuter surgeries.
For our avian clients, we will do avian exams, wing and nail trims, and beak trims (on consultation).
Other exotics that we have dealt with include: ferrets, hedge hogs, gerbils, chinchillas, mini pigs, pot belly pigs, snakes, lizards, and turtles. If we are unable to assist you with your particular pet, we will provide options for referral to an exotic veterinarian specialist.
One of the main concerns we see in small animals (dogs and cats) is obesity.
Research has shown that obese pets live 2 years less than pets of an appropriate body weight. One of our jobs as veterinarians is to provide research based recommendations regarding what to feed your pet. Many different factors play into food recommendations.
This includes assessing what your pet feels like (body condition scoring), what the scale reads, age and life stage, and underlying medical conditions such as kidney function.
There is a lot of “Hype” and marketing about the “right” thing to feed your pet. A lot of what people are seeing on TV is just that: MARKETING. It is our job as veterinarians, to assist you in determining what food is in the best choice for your pet.
Microchipping is an easy, permanent means of identification for your pet. Microchipping has several advantages over tattoos. It is a radio frequency identification implant inserted between the shoulder blades just under the skin that cannot be felt or removed. It is the size of a grain of rice and can be read by most microchip scanners in shelters and veterinary clinics. The code is specific to your pet and can be used to identify the owners and their contact information. We offer burial boxes to take home or cremation, with ashes spread by the river or returned to you. We offer clay impressions, with a variety of colors to choose from. The size of the paw print will determine whether the name and age will go on the front or back of the impression. You can choose from a display stand or ornament-style with a ribbon to hang the impression. There is also a small version that has a magnet on the back. This is only suitable for cats and small dogs. We also offer an impression in a 5 x 7 frame, with optional add-on of an additional hinged frame for you to display your pet’s photo.
We also offer gray-scale prints with the option to create a piece of silver jewelry down the road… The print is yours to keep and looks wonderful when framed.

State of the art diagnostic laboratory services are very important in the timely and accurate diagnosis for our patients. Lloydminster Animal Hospital uses a full array of IDEXX laboratory equipment in hospital to allow for extremely fast blood and urine results for our patients allowing for proper diagnosis and faster treatment, especially in emergency situations. We also utilize the services of our IDEXX reference laboratory in Calgary to perform blood tests that cannot be run in clinic or those where timing is not as critical. Even with these send out tests, results are usually available within 2 working days.
We also utilize our reference laboratory to provide diagnostics on biopsy samples and the lab also provides us with the ability to discuss complicated cases with board certified experts. We can also send ultrasound and digital radiology studies to experts for interpretation via telemedicine. This can allow us to obtain information faster for the client from a specialist without always having to send the client to a referral facility saving time and money.
Pets are living longer due to advancements in diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. At the Lloydminster Animal Hospital, we are proud to have state of the art technology to improve our diagnostic capabilities. This includes a Computed Radiography X-ray machine which produces a digital image for small animals, a Dental Radiograph unit for Digital Dental radiographs, a Portable Digital radiography (x-ray) for equine, and a Ultrasound machine. We also have the capability to perform Endoscopic exams with our Endoscope.
